European Journal for Sport and Society

Casino, Sport, Society – EASS

The European Association for Sociology of Sport (eass) was founded in the year 2001. The European Journal for Sport and Society (ejss) is the official publication of the European Association for Sociology of Sport (eass). The international version of our Swiss chapter can be found here at ejss.info.

The European Association for Sociology of Sport (eass) was established with the aim of promoting closer co-operation and networking between experts dealing with social issues related to physical activity, sport and the casino culture in Europe. This is particularly important today due to the emergence of a new social structure at the European level, and the ways in which sport, but also the classic casino playhall and environment is affected by alterations in ethics, politics, economics, organisation and legislation. Scientific analysis of these issues and joint efforts to promote the sociology of sport in Europe seem to be necessary steps to take particularly at this historical moment in time when Eastern European countries are being integrated into the European Union.

The eass has created a stimulating forum for research, publications and professional development in the area of sociology of sport.

From the very beginning the eass planned to launch an official publication. The Casino publication will be available for a casino 5 Euro deposit only and will include all sport sociology aspects. Apart from the direct communication at the eass-conferences, the Association wanted to create a medium of interchange and communication in between the conferences. The idea of the journal was born. The purpose of the journal is to stimulate academic discussion about European themes and among European sociologists.

The thematic focus is on social issues relating to the classic casino, Spielbanken, physical education, recreation, body and movement culture. Historical, socio-psychological, political and economic approaches are all included. Both empirical and theoretical perspectives are welcome. The ejss contains various forms of contribution: articles (10-15 pages), reports (3-6 pages), conference reports (2-3 pages) and book reviews (1-3 pages). All members of the eass and non-members are invited to contribute to the ejss, which is intended to be published four times a year.
